Peripheral Neuropathy

Treatment Of Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral Neuropathy is the medical definition of damage or injured nerves that lay outside the brain and spinal cord, ie: arms, shoulders, pelvis, legs or feet. Because there are so many different conditions that can cause leg or foot pain, the most important aspect of treating peripheral neuropathy is in the diagnosing of the damage to the nerve, and where it truly is coming from. This damage can occur due to a number of different causes, stemming from direct trauma to the extremity, or side-effects of system illness or chemical injury.

Some of the most common signs or symptoms that occur with injury to the external nerves are muscle weakness, muscle spasms and muscle cramping.  Damage to the sensory portions of the nerve can produce numbness or tingling, shooting or electric type of pain that occurs in the legs or arms.  Patients can also complain of sensations of wearing an invisible “glove” or “sock”, or electric-like, burning or extreme sensitivity to touch.

The most common type of peripheral neuropathy comes from Diabetic Neuropathy to the feet or hands, due to the toxic effects high blood sugar on peripheral nerves and circulation.

The most important part of treating peripheral neuropathy is finding out the true cause of the neuropathy.  At Millstone Medical, our team or doctors and physician assistants, use the most cutting edge diagnostic tests to find the true cause of your neuropathic pain and the to fix your symptoms.
